After many months (maybe years!) of researches, stress, home inspections and documents you’ve finally bought a home!
Now you are preparing all the boxes containing your stuff and are ready to move.
Here is a list of the 5 top things you will need to do when you are moving to a new home:
1. Change the locks on the entrance door.
As soon as the closing is over and you’ve gotten the keys of your new home, the first thing to do is change the locks of the entrance door. You really don’t know who else has a copy of the key, you must ensure yourself that you are the only person who has the access to the house.
2. Change your address
Be sure to change the address of your residence with the post office so that your mail is sent to your new address. You won’t miss important mail or bills in need of payment. Don’t forget to update your address for the driver’s license (notify the company that provides your auto insurance, as well!), voter registration, your bank (credit cards) and health insurance.
3. Meet your neighbors
Your house it’s part of a whole community take a walk around your new neighborhood and be sure to introduce yourself to local people. Your neighbors can become some of your closest friends. The benefits are endless, just to name a few: they can help watch your home when you’re away, help you in case of a problem in the house, or if you might have an health problem; you can ask them to take care of your plants or pets while you are away – during holidays, .
4. Make a list for emergencies
It’s important to make a list of emergency telephone numbers and addresses (the doctor, the ambulance, fire, hospital, police station, pharmacy and vet) you’ll be glad to know who to call when an emergency hits. It would be useful to have a list of the family contact number (mom, dad, sister/brother, cousin, aunt, friends etc..) Hang this list up on your fridge or another prominent place in your home.
5. Explore the area
Explore the area is a must do when moving to a new place. You can have an idea of the best shops, groceries, cafeteria and restaurants that you can find in your new village.
